I qualified from the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, School of Physiotherapy in 1987. In common with most newly qualified physiotherapists, for the first two years, I worked with patients in a wide range of medical fields which included Intensive Care, Neurology, Childrens, Elderly, Orthopaedics, following trauma or joint replacement surgery, Gynaecology and Burns.
I soon realised that I preferred working with patients who were suffering with ‘musculoskeletal’ (bone, joint, ligament, tendon, muscle or nerve) problems, or following injuries, (sports / work / accident related). To that end, I have post-graduate qualifications in Physiotherapy which have led to senior clinical roles such as Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner within the NHS. During my career I have managed teams of Physiotherapists, developed services to assist patients with more significant musculoskeletal problems to obtain the right help and treatment of their problem, have supervised, mentored and examined physiotherapists in training at under-graduate and post-graduate level.
I established Nicola Johnson Physiotherapy in 2010 from home in Much Marcle, and have developed clinics in Fownhope and Ross and Corse since that time.
I feel especially grateful that my work as a physiotherapist has enabled me to come into contact with and develop a depth of understanding of people of all types, all shapes and sizes and from all walks of life! Whilst it is rewarding to assist people return to function that they had temporarily lost, I am often also involved in simply providing an assessment, or advice, or assisting people to come to terms with and manage a long-term condition.
